Renters Insurance Information
Renters Insurance for El Paso, Anthony, Socorro and San Antonio
While you may not own a home, you probably still want to protect your belongings from theft or damage. Just because you live in an apartment or other rented property in El Paso or San Antonio doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have insurance too. Renters insurance offers the peace of mind you are looking for.
What Does it Cover?
With renters insurance, you will be able to replace anything that a disaster or a thief damages or steals. Renters insurance covers your possessions against losses from fire or smoke, lightning, vandalism, theft, explosion, windstorms, and water damage from plumbing. You will pay lower premiums than homeowners and still have the protection you need. If a disaster forces you out of your home, the insurance will often cover your additional living expenses.
Renters insurance pays the reasonable additional costs of temporarily living away from your home if you can't live in it due to a fire, severe storm or other insured disaster. The coverage will take care of hotel bills, temporary rentals, restaurant meals and other living expenses incurred while you look for a new place. Coverage for additional living expenses differs from company to company.
Renters insurance also covers your responsibility to other people. This includes anyone injured at your home or elsewhere by you, a family member or your pet and pays legal defense costs if you are taken to court. In the long run, if you do find yourself in an adverse situation, that monthly premium goes a long way.
Renters Insurance Has Limitations
However, renters insurance does not cover floods, earthquakes or routine wear and tear. You can, however, buy separate policies for flood and earthquake damage. You can base your decision on your location. Oftentimes, people in Texas will purchase flood insurance, but opt out of the earthquake coverage. Knowing the area you live in will give you a better idea of what you need.
Decide How Much Insurance You Need
Add up the cost of everything you would want to replace if it were damaged or stolen. This could also serve as the basis for an inventory that will make filing a claim easier. For an inventory, also record model numbers, dates and places of purchase. Take photographs or make a video of these items. Then place a copy of the inventory in a safe place away from your home. While this may seem like a lot of work, if a tragic event were to take place, you would be covered. You might also regret not taking the time to calculate the value of your belongings.
